Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Kairouan
[Up to Tunis and nearby Tunisia: 8-17 June, 2019 ]

Our first trip to Africa! We went to Tunis, and took a bunch of short trips to nearby places in Tunisia.

Kairouan is one of the many cities that has been labeled the 4th holiest city in the Islamic world (after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem).

The markings on this door are Berber. The Berber people are one of the pre-Islamic peoples of North Africa.

Arches in the Great Mosque of Kairouan. The mosque was established in 670 CE. It served as an important university where scholars studied both Islamic and secular subjects.

A well in the courtyard of the mosque. You can see where ropes have worn the marble over the centuries.

Ian examines a sundial. Kat had packed a scarf, but we failed to prepare for covering our legs. Luckily they had robes for visitors to borrow.

Building materials from all over the area were used to build the mosque, including many columns from Carthage and elsewhere. Here's some latin that was, presumably, on the stone before it was reused here.
