Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Schilthorn
[Up to Switzerland: 18–24 June, 2017 ]

In June 2017, Ian gave a talk at the EPFL Summer Research Institute. Kat joined for the trip, and we extended it to a week in Switzerland.

On our second morning, we went up "our" side of the valley to the very peak of Schilthorn. This site is best known for being the filming location of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. There's a lot of Bond-themed stuff up there.

We started the day with a hike to Gimmelwald. We learned more about the different kinds of avalanche barriers from interpretive signs along the way.

It was a pleasant hike with nice views, but still 30+ Celsius.

There's the cable car we'll be taking up the mountain soon.

Up at the peak. We're at 2970 metres (9,744 ft) altitude. Not as high up as yesterday, but still quite signifacant (and noticeable).

The view from the revolving restaurant at the top of the complex. The restaurant featured heavily in the movie (and was in fact constructed originally explicitly for the movie).

You can walk out to another area. I saw literature about Schilthorn that said there was snow here 365 days a year. Well, not anymore.

At the end of the "official" path, you're welcome to just go out on your own on the mountain.

The Bond theme was pervasive. Inside was a quite comprehensive exhibition about the making of the movie, which was surprisingly interesting.

The observation deck had one of those glass floors that's supposed to be scary to walk out on. But the scary part was that in one place, the glass floor was already cracked!

Ian walked on a non-cracked part.

On the cable car down from Schilthorn, we got a good view of Mürren, from its side of the valley.

Allmendhubel, 300 metres above Mürren, and the destination of our hike on the first afternoon.
