In June 2017, Ian gave a talk at the EPFL Summer Research Institute. Kat joined for the trip, and we extended it to a week in Switzerland.

The view right when you step out of the train station in Mürren. You're already at more than 1600 metres elevation at this point, nestled in the Swiss Alps.

The view from our hotel balcony. We stayed at Hotel Eiger, which was splendid. Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau are known as "the big three". You can see Jungfrau to the right, behind the closer mountain. Eiger and Mönch's peaks, to the left, are obscured by clouds. We didn't get a good picture of all three, but there are plenty online.

The first afternoon, we set out for a hike. We were aiming for one of the easy "Wanderweg" hikes, it being our first afternoon at altitude. But we somehow got turned around onto one of the more difficult trails, doing a 300 metre rise in 30+ Celcius heat and no shade, so it was a little more brutal than we had planned for.

Directional signs pointing out various hikes you can do. The "Allmendhubel" one at the top right was the one we set out to do the first day. Note that it's labelled yellow (easy) not white/red (hard), but somehow we got on a hard trail along the way.
