We went to Spain in July 2012, for the ECRYPT Provable Privacy workshop and the Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium (both in Vigo), but spent a few days in Barcelona fist, and had an afternoon and evening in Madrid on the way home.

Our hotel in Madrid was near the national parliament. There had been recent riots, and so many of the streets were barricaded. Our taxi from the airport had to stop a few blocks away, and we walked the rest.

The very first work we came across in the museum was Garotte Vil 1894, a reproduction of which we had seen on our Spanish Civil War tour earlier, and which is set in a square we had visited.
