Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Around the island
[Up to Cozumel, Mexico: Feb 14-19, 2008 ]

In the last Ontario election, the incumbent leader promised a new long weekend in February if he was re-elected. He was, and to everyone's surprise, he followed through with Family Day. We took the long weekend and an extra couple of days as an opportunity to get out of the Canadian winter and go to somewhere warm. We chose Cozumel, Mexico. This was our first beach-style vacation together. We had a great time.

On Sunday (our fourth day), we drove around the island: from San Miguel to the southern tip of the island, up along the eastern edge to the cross-island road, and back to town. We stopped at several places along the way.

Our first stop was at El Cedral, the first site founded by Spanish explorers (1518).

We then drove to Punta Sur, a national park at the southern tip of the island. You can see the lighthouse (containing a museum) in the distance if you look carefully.

There were lots of iguanas. We took lots of pictures of them. :-)

Crocodiles live in the lagoon. There's a place you can watch them.

On our way back across the island, we stopped at the San Gervasio archealogical site. This fellow greeted us in the parking area.

I wondered why this arch didn't have a keystone. Did that technology not make it here by the 1200s?

We saw this pretty impressive-looking spider on the way out. Any suggestions as to what kind it might be?
