Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Saint John
[Up to New Brunswick: 30 Aug - 8 Sep, 2004 ]

Here are pictures from various trips I have taken to faraway (and not-so-faraway) places.

For Kat's birthday this year, we took a road trip to New Brunswick. We came in through Quebec, travelled the north, east, and south coasts of New Brunswick, and then returned home via Maine.
After Hopewell Cape, it was off to Saint John. [You always spell out the "Saint" so as to more easily distinguish Saint John (in New Brunswick) from St. John's (in Newfoundland).] We took a scenic road along the south coast for the most part.

We saw a sign for miniature horses, so we had to follow it. Even though I've seen these animals in person a number of times, I still consider them somewhat mythical.

On the way to the miniature horses, we passed by more flowerpot rocks.

Here are some next to the barn and door, so you can get a better idea of scale.

We also went by a lighthouse, so we went to check it out.

After the first day in Saint John, we moved to the Inn on the Cove. We got there a little before checkin time, so we passed some time in the nearby (as in adjacent to the inn) Irving Nature Park. Here are some views from an observation platform in the park.

Reversing Falls. The St. John river (apparently, the river's name is Abbreviated, but the city's is not) flows into the Bay of Fundy. But the Bay changes its height by over 10 metres due to the tides, so at high tide, the Bay's water level is higher than the river's, and (salt) water from the Bay is forced backwards up the (freshwater) river. In this picture, "downstream" (towards the Bay and the ocean) is up towards the right, and "upstream" (inland) is towards the left. But as you can see from the turbulence around the rock, the water is flowing upstream.

Here are some movies of the water flowing upstream, stopping and turning around, and flowing downstream.

The room at the Inn on the Cove. It had a jacuzzi tub next to a Bay window, overlooking, well, the Bay (of Fundy). The room had ADSL "on tap" (they give you an ethernet cable), but no telephone. It's a sign of the times: people bring their phones with them, but still generally need their net to come out of a wall.

There's also a balcony in the room. Here's the view from there.
