Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: The plantation and swamp tours
[Up to Ian and Kat's Mardi Gras trip to New Orleans: 3-10 March, 2003 ]

In early March 2003, Kat and I went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. It was my first time in New Orleans, and the first Mardi Gras for both of us. I also got to meet Kat's brother Ben, who lives there. We had a wonderful time, and of course took a bunch of pictures. :-)

On Friday, we went to take a swamp tour. When we got there, however, we discovered they had screwed up our reservations, and were overbooked. They apologized, and paid our way in to a nearby plantation, while we waited for the afternoon swamp tour. So it worked out fine, and the weather was even nicer in the afternoon. :-)

On our way to the swamp tour, Kat spotted this turtle trying to cross the road. It had gotten a little more than halfway.

The plantation house. It dates back to about the 1820's.

I dunno; to me, "sacrifices" connotes something more voluntary than slavery.

The large silos at the side of the house are for the storage of water. This enabled gravity-powered running water in the house.

At one point, the guide brought out (of a cooler) an alligator the other guide had captured on the previous tour.

Kat and the alligator pose for a picture. The guide got the gator to "smile" by tapping on its nose. Apparently, that causes it to open its mouth.

Note the blood on the guide's hand; the gator snapped at him when he took it out of the cooler.

One last gator shot. Later on in the tour, the gator was returned to the other guide, to be taken back where he was found. (Alligators are very territorial, so putting him in a different place would just cause him to get eaten.)

It really looks more like land than like water, but our boat went through it nonetheless.

At one point, our airboat got stuck on some mud, and we had to get out while our guide and some helpful passers-by rocked it out.
