Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Places around New Orleans
[Up to Ian and Kat's Mardi Gras trip to New Orleans: 3-10 March, 2003 ]

In early March 2003, Kat and I went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. It was my first time in New Orleans, and the first Mardi Gras for both of us. I also got to meet Kat's brother Ben, who lives there. We had a wonderful time, and of course took a bunch of pictures. :-)

On Tuesday, the river (that's the Mississippi, of course) was completely covered in mist.

You really couldn't see to the other side.

The streets here are oddly named, and even more oddly pronounced. The streets (at least in the French Quarter) all have an English name and a French name, and the two seem to be completely unrelated, as can be seen in this picture. [And the streets all have historical third names, which were their names in Spanish times.]

And the pronunciations are often crazy. "Burgundy" is pronounced "burr-GUN-dy". "Calliope" is pronounced like "envelope". And this last one is crazy, "Clio" is pronounced "see-el-ten". Mindboggling.

On Wednesday, the mist was lower on the river, so it looked like the boats were riding the mist.

You could just about see the other side.

We ran across these crazy action figures in a store window.

On Thursday, you could easily see right across the river.

Kat, in front of Lake Pontchartrain. This lake is huge. Notice the bridge in the background (the Causeway). It's about 38 km long, and it disappears over the horizon.
