Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Solipse in Hungary
[Up to Our World Travels ]

Here are pictures from various trips I have taken to faraway (and not-so-faraway) places.

Solipse was a week-long rave surrounding the total solar eclipse of 11 August, 1999. It took place at a campsite outside of Ozora, Hungary. I was only there for the days leading up to the eclipse; we left the campsite the moment the sun was back to normal.

On our way to Solipse, we passed by a crashed MIG in a parking lot in Hungary, a ways south of Budapest. Here we see myself, Sameer, and Adam posing.

This was scratched on the side of the MIG. I'm told it's an address [ as in: if found, please return to... :-) ? ].

Dave del Torto, with his souvenir eclipse towel, and me, with my world's-best-travelled Hippies From Hell T-shirt.

A random bunch of Cypherpunks and Hippies (these sets are not disjoint). Here we see Nikita, Alex, Vesna, me, Stephanie, and Adam.

There were lots of people at Solipse. This is a tiny part of the parking lot.

And even more tents.

This was the circus tent used to house the first of three big soundsystems. (This was a rave, remember.) It was also useful to hide under during the thunderstorm the morning of the eclipse.

Assorted food vendors, where you could trade thousands of forints for quite decent stuff.

Stephanie and Alex. [ Isn't that the cutest thing she's wearing? :-) ]

Partiality has begun. An image of the sun, projected by John Gilmore through a monocular (a one-eyed binocular) onto a white card. The monocular is a handy Edmund Scientific 8x20 that easily drops into your pocket, unlike those binoculars you seldom carry.

Ryan was feeling quite happy to watch the eclipse from the car.

Another group brought a lawn dwarf. An attempt to appease the gods, maybe? Vesna (BECHA) alongside.

Sameer, Hinde, and Adam head off to the spot they've chosen for observation, while Vesna and the dwarf pose.

It gets dark. Note there are lots of clouds. I was having absolutely awesome karma that week, so I knew that nothing could possibly go wrong. Most of the others doubted me, and were threatening to burn me at the stake for hubristic behaviour. Those infidels will burn in hell.

Note the lack of clouds where the sun is. :-)

Totality. My digital camera (and excited hand) unfortunately didn't get the best picture. :-(

After the eclipse, we went back to Budapest. This is me (and, once again, the world's-best-travelled Hippies From Hell sirt) at the Citadel, pointing out Buda (on the left), and Pest (on the right).
