Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Pictures from Queensday
[Up to Queensday 1999 in Amsterdam and Paris ]

Here are pictures from various trips I have taken to faraway (and not-so-faraway) places.

These are photos I took during my trip to Amsterdam (and a daytrip to Paris) between 28 April 1999 and 6 May 1999. After I passed my qualifying exams on 26 April, I hopped on a plane to Amsterdam the next day for a week and a half of partying.

Near the end of my trip, I also threw a Party At Ian's Place At the Hippies Hangout.

Pictures around town from Queensday (30 April) and the day before.

Kerry (half-hidden behind the bicyclist; oops), Mark, myself, and Shar in a park on 29 April, the day before Queensday.

After the park, Shar and I wandered about. We stumbled upon this group practising drumming, so we watched for a while.

Queensday in Amsterdam. This is a national holiday cebrating a prior queen's birthday (the current queen's birthday is in the winter, and no one wanted to have the national holiday then). On this day, it seems there are many times more visitors to the city than there are natives.

Queensday is the day people in Amsterdam are allowed to hold what we in North America call ``garage sales'': they just put all of their junk out and try to sell it to people.

More stuff for sale. Note the countertop stove near the top of the picture. We could have used that at the Hangout, but we didn't notice it until after we looked at these pictures. D'oh.

Orange is the official colour of Queensday. Even the horses were wearing orange.

A shop selling magic mushroom tea for 5 guilders a cup. You don't see that in the States.

Lots of people in boats, lots of people on land. Big party day in Amsterdam.

After much calling back and forth on cellphones, we finally found Nikita, who had arrived on Queensday. He had observed that asking people in the street for directions was pointless, because there were more tourists than locals around that day. Thank goodness for technology.

The Queensday pre-party we went to. We all just lay out in the sun on this cargoship-turned-houseboat.
