Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Our daytrip to Paris
[Up to Queensday 1999 in Amsterdam and Paris
]
Here are pictures from various trips I have taken to faraway (and
not-so-faraway) places.
These are photos I took during my trip to Amsterdam (and a daytrip to Paris)
between 28 April 1999 and 6 May 1999. After I passed my qualifying
exams on 26 April, I hopped on a plane to Amsterdam the next day for
a week and a half of partying.
Near the end of my trip, I also threw a
Party At Ian's Place At the
Hippies Hangout.
Shar, Nikita, and I took a daytrip to Paris on Sunday, 2 May. We went by
the night train on Saturday night, spent 12 wonderful hours in Paris,
and returned Sunday night.
It turned out Nikita had lived in Paris for a little while, 9 years earlier,
and he had a useful amount of French in him (mine wasn't totally useless,
either), so he got to be our Native Guide.

- Sacre Coeur. This is the highest point in Paris; we found it simply by
walking uphill at each intersection until we got there. (Yes, I know
about local maxima.)

the little Ian and Shar in front.

- Place Concorde. Looks an awful lot like Washington, DC, doesn't it?
(Though, correctly, I suppose it's the other way around.)

- We approach the Arc de Triomphe. There's no obvious way to get across
the street without being squished; yet there are many people there.
So we look around, and find the pedestrian underpass. Phewf.

- Just after the Arc de Triomphe, we stopped at a great little cafe for lunch.
Wine, cheese, French food. Very wonderful. Two hours later (at about
1 pm) we resumed our trek. We're getting nearer to the Eiffel Tower
now.

- As I turned the corner, I literally said, ``Ohmygodit'stheEiffelTower!''.
Here's Nikita standing in front of it. The big clock on the Eiffel Tower
is counting down days until Y2K.

- I'm standing under the Eiffel Tower. It's just so
mind-boggling; we came to Paris basically on a whim. We bought train
tickets mere minutes before the train was to leave. What a trip!

- The Eiffel Tower has three levels; you can walk to the first or second level,
but you need to buy elevator tickets for the top. We didn't want to wait
for the elevator, so we just walked up to the second level. Here's
a view of Paris from the Eiffel Tower. Note Sacre Coeur on the
horizon. We walked from there.
