Pictures from Ian and Kat's Digital Camera: Replacing the furnace and AC: 1-2 May, 2008
[Up to Renovations ]

Here are pictures of our new house in Kitchener, taken at various stages.

These are various renovations we did around the house.
We knew when we bought the house that the furnace was Very Old, and would need replacing sooner rather than later. Over the course of the Winter of 2008, it stopped working a number of times, though resetting it (usually when we woke up on a cold morning) would bring it back into action.

When it started doing this, though, we started seriously looking into replacing it. Good thing, too, because it finally died (and didn't restart) during the night before the installers were coming to put in the new one. Convenient, that.

The old furnace. Hulking monster, that one.

The furnace comes pretty close to a rug in the basement. Hopefully the new furnace isn't too much wider than this one.

The old condenser pump that sends the water runoff across the basement to where the drain is.

Pull the rug back, and get to work.

Outside, the chimney needs to be altered since the new furnace won't be venting into it. The hot water heater still is, though, so the chimney will need a liner.

The furnace is gone! Throughout the day, it stayed a steady 16C in the house. Note at the top, there's a vent just feet from the furnace. This is poor, since lots of air escapes there, rather than going to the rest of the house.

I have no idea what all this stuff does.

Things are not looking good for the rug, though.

Two holes are drilled through the wall for air input and exhaust.

The furnace is hooked up to the air input and exhaust.

The rug doesn't quite fit; we'll move the rug a couple of inches later on. This entails moving desks, computers, a UPS, etc., but it results in a cleaner basement when it's all done, so it's a win.

The air input (white) and exhaust snorkel (black). The snorel ourput is 7 feet off the ground because that's our driveway it's venting into. If there were a car right in front of the exhaust, its paint would get stripped off in short order.

The second day. The new AC unit; it's much taller than the old one, but only a slightly larger footprint.

Make sure there's enough air circulation around the sides.

Back in the basement, install a return air duct. (There wasn't one before.) This should lower the humidity down there in the summer.

Also, remove the vent that was there.

As above, hopefully we won't need our dehumidifier for the basement any more, but just in case, it's still hooked up, draining into the condenser pump.

There's a new electrical shutoff for the AC outside the house. (New building code.)
